Who is at Risk of a Sports Injury?

Anyone could incur a sports injury, and athletes, in general, are typically most at risk. However, some actions may increase that risk:

  • You have not been regularly active in a given sport, jumping into an athletic activity quickly can place you at a higher risk.
  • Those who exercise or engage in sports and do not warm-up and stretch fully and properly beforehand are at a higher risk for a sports injury.
  • Even the most fully conditioned and well-prepared athletes who engage in contact sports can expect to suffer a sports injury at some point.

Common Types of Sports Injuries

There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of specific injures that can develop during an athletic activity. However, most of them will fit into one or more of the following categories:

  • Strains and sprains: Tearing or over-stretching a tendon or muscle can cause a sprain or strain. These two types of injuries are similar and closely related. The difference between them is generally only a matter of severity.
  • Swollen Muscles: A common response to any injury, swelling in a muscle can cause weakness and pain.
  • Knee Injuries: Injuries that interfere with the proper movement of the knee joint will cause pain and stiffness. Knee injuries could result from a strain or sprain, damage to the cartilage, or a fracture to the bone.
  • Rupture of the Achilles Tendon: The Achilles tendon is the strong, thick tendon at the back of the ankle. If it is injured, standing can be difficult or impossible.
  • Dislocations: Bones that have become dislodged from a socket are said to be dislocated. These injures can be painful. A dislocation can damage the joint or the surrounding tissue, and often requires medical attention.
  • Fracture: Any breakage of a bone is a fracture. There are simple fractures and compound fractures, with the latter being more severe than the former.
  • Injured Rotator Cuff: The complex mass of muscle and connective tissues that hold the shoulder together can be injured in many ways, all of which require medical treatment.

The vast majority of sports injuries can be safely and successfully treated through an individualized plan of chiropractic care.
